Issue Summary

Cerebus goes to the Temple of the Black Sun in order to find the treasure which the dying man (from issue #6) told Cerebus about. As he is within sight of the temple, Elrod appears again. Elrod claims to be there for the "Festival of the Black Sun."

Cerebus only takes Elrod with him because if Elrod is found wandering around outside, it will lead them to Cerebus. While Cerebus and Elrod are looking around the temple on their own, a Black Sun follower, Mit, is making himself a costume of an "Nameless One" in order to gain more power within the Black Sun. His costume looks a lot like Cerebus.

After the two get separated, Elrod runs into Mit who is in his costume and Elrod mistakes Mit for Cerebus. The Black Sun cultists have discovered Cerebus and Elrod inside the temple and Lyran the Death Dealer is told to capture and kill them. After a chase in the temple and several cases of mistaken identity later, Elrod is left running around in the temple while Cerebus makes an escape without the treasure he found.

Mit and Elrod escape the temple, right before it goes up in smoke after the Priests chants cause the spell to go haywire. The treasure goes flying in one direction and Cerebus in the other direction.

Annotations

  • Elrod is carrying apricot brandy.
  • It may be as a result of this issue's events that Cerebus has run into Hsifan Sopai assassins (Issue 21). (Alexx)
  • "the creature probes seeking a soul" -- another suggestion that Cerebus' either doesn't have a soul or doesn't have an accessible one.
  • No direct explanation for Cerebus' survival is ever provided.
