Issue Summary

Lord Julius and Duke Leonardi of New Sepra, a parody of Chico Marx, come to Iest for a trilateral summit. Lord Julius' suggestion that the New Seprans are stupid and rich causes Cerebus to change his plans of conquest.

Astoria talks Cerebus into meeting with his cabinet, to which Cerebus replies he should have disbanded cabinet meetings when he disbanded the legislature. At the cabinet meeting, Blakely asks one question and then Cerebus quickly leaves. Cerebus then discusses matters with his inner circle, which consists of him getting drunk with Henrot and the Elf.

Cerebus also gets a couple of Tarimite bishops totally sloshed. From them he finds out the importance of the albatross.

Annotations

  • This issue is "sideways" from the standard comicbook layout in that the pages are rotated 90° from the standard.
  • "Don't ask me why, but I was sure he was going to say something else just then" - Lord Julius and Duke Leonardi are based on Groucho and Chico Marx, and the Marx Brothers movie "The Cocoanuts" contains a lengthy gag starting with Chico's character mishearing "viaduct" as "why a duck".
  • Cerebus' cabinet has its only on-panel meeting. Attending are Filgate, Blakely, Lord Rodney, the unnamed Minister for External Affairs, and the unnamed Minister of Roads and Waterways (both last seen in issue 45).

Back up material

  • A Dick Mallet Tale, "The Missing Schoolgirl," pt. 1 (Sech/Cherkas) (4)
  • Fan Art in Aardvark Comment - Cerebus, Cutey Bunny, the Space Gophers and Fatty Tubbins (Quagmire)
